Most parents let their children talk and share while they read to their children. Some parents may not know how to let this interaction happen naturally. I have heard of parents who don’t let their children interrupt them while they read.
If you ever run into a parent who thinks it’s rude for a child to talk or interrupt while they read, please share this post with them. It includes a video of a mom and son interacting while she reads a book to him.
When a teacher has a classroom full of children, interactions are limited. Parents have the opportunity to make read alouds a special learning and bonding experience by encouraging their children to talk and share their thoughts.
Happy Reading!

Great info! Let’s all read more and interact more with our kids!
Such good information! I’ve noticed some of my kids grandparents will kind of get after them for talking while they read or turning the pages too quickly. I probably wouldn’t have given it a thought, though, if I hadn’t observed it. I really shuts kids down but I think some parents think they are doing the “right” thing by helping kids attend to the story. It’s great to have an expert like you share how to get kids to attend to the story AND actively participate when reading with parents!
